Seasonal Stuff to Make

Smallish Hearts (no indication of the amount of love contained)

Supplies ::
Yarn :: scrappy bits.  Bright colors.  Hook :: I used a US size H.  Scissors.  That's about it.

Step The First ::

Make a slip knot and put it on your hook.  Chain 6, as shown above.

Step the Second ::

Turn and sc in 2nd ch from hook, and across chain.   You'll have five stitches.

Step the Third ::

Work 5 more rows as follows :: sc across, ch 1, turn.  You have a more-or-less Square.  Do not finish off!  Turn it one turn to the right....

Step the Fourth ::

Work one hdc into the same exact space you did your last sc in.  You will see that the sides of the rows form pretty convenient spaces.  Work one dc into the next space.

Now you see a space that looks to be about the middle of that side of the square.  Work 3 treble crochet into that one space.  See picture below ::

Now work one hdc into the next space, and you get the picture below ::

Slip stitch into that corner space.

Step The Fifth ::

Work one hdc into the next space.  Now you're working into proper stitch heads, instead of the sides of rows.

Step The Sixth ::

You've reached the middle stitch in that side of the square now.  Work 3 treble crochet into that single stitch.  Then work one hdc into the next stitch.  There is one stitch left.  Sc into it (see below) and finish off.

Now You Have the Picture Below.  You can stop here or edge them, like I do ::

Step The Seventh ::

Enter a space on the side of your heart and place a new slipknot on your hook.  Draw through, yarn over your hook, and draw through.  You've joined on with a new color!  *cheers*

Work one sc into the same exact space.

Work sc into the convenient spaces until you reach the corner.  Turn that corner however you like, just make sure you get at least three sc into that corner space one way or another.  Continue along the other side....

Until you reach the first treble crochet you made.  Work 2 sc into the head of that, and work 2 sc into the head of the next.  Then work 1 sc into each of the next two stitches.

Now you're going to enter a space which cannot be described, so look at that picture above.  You enter that, then work a sc into it, a loooooooong-bottomed sc.  See picture below ::

That just defines that this is, in fact, a heart.

Step The Eighth ::

Work 1 sc into each of the next two stitches.  Work 2 sc into each of the NEXT two stitches.  Then continue sc round like normal edging, till you get to the last stitch ::

Join with slip stitch to the first sc made in the edging color.

Finish off.

Step The Ninth :: Pat self on back and grin. ;)

Especially for Easter, here is Amzi's Handy Dandy

Open:Able:Easter:Egg!
Fixin's You'll Be Needin' ::
  • Yarny Stuffs :: various colors, but all one weight, or you'll have a Wonky Egg (GASP OF HORROR!) I used DK weight...
  • Hooky Toolery :: I used a 4.25 size US G crochet hook.  It makes a good tight work-up with DK and worsted
  • Delightful Filling Materials :: You choose!

US/UK Converion ::
  • US sc = UK dc
  • US slip stitch/chain stitch = UK slip stitch/chain stitch
Stitch Abbreviations ::
  • dec = skip next space and sc in the one after
  • inc = work 2 sc in next space
CHANGE COLORS AT WiLL OR AT RANDOM THROUGHOUT THiS PATTERN.  iN MY EXAMPLE, i CHANGED COLORS EVERY TWO ROWS.  CHANGE COLORS BY CUTTiNG YOUR YARN AND ATTACHiNG THE NEW COLOR YARN WiTH A KNOT CLOSE TO THE WORK.

Bottom Half ::

Ch 23 and join in a ring with slip stitch, being careful not to twist.
Round 1 :: Working into the bump on the back of the chain so as to have a nice finished edge, sc around
Round 2 :: Sc around
Round 3 :: Aaaaand sc around again
Round 4 ::  *sc 5, dec* repeat * to * two more times, sc 2
Round 5 :: sc 3, dec, *sc 5, dec* repeat * to * once, sc 2
Round 6 :: sc 1, dec, *sc 3, dec* repeat * to * two more times
Round 7 :: *sc 1, dc* repeat * to * four more times
Round 8 :: dec, dec, dec

Finish off, leaving a long tail.  Thread the tail through a yarn needle and weave the end through each of the stitches around the opening.  Pull tight to close the opening and weave in.

Top Half ::

Ch 23 and join in a ring with slip stitch, being careful not to twist.
Round 1 :: Working into the bump on the back of the chain so as to have a nice finished edge, sc around
Round 2 :: *sc 6, dec* repeat * to * two more times
Round 3 :: *sc 6, dec* repeat * to * once, sc 6
Round 4 :: *sc 8, dec* repeat * to * once
Round 5 :: Sc around
Round 6 :: *sc 7, dec* repeat * to * once
Round 7 :: Sc around
Round 8 :: Sc 3, dec, sc 5, dec, sc 3
Round 9 :: *dec, sc 3* repeat * to * once, dec
Round 10 :: *sc 1, dec* repeat * to * once

Finish off, leaving a long tail.  Thread the tail through a yarn needle and weave the end through each of the stitches around the opening.  Pull tight to close the opening and weave in.

Now you have the two halves.  Flatten them out.  Cut a longish length of yarn, thread your yarn needle, and stitch the two halves to each other.  I recommend you stitch about halfway around the open circles of the halves, if that makes any sense, so that they hold their shape relatively well.  Now it looks like one of those plastic Easter Eggs the snap open and closed.  If you want to make getting into them a little harder, or falling out of them a little harder, cut a short length of yarn and tie the open end shut with a bow.  OR you might attach a button and a loop of yarn for a clasp.

Now fill with scraps of green yarn or Easter-basket-shredded-paper stuff, and add a chocolate or a small treasure.  :)

Irish Shamrock

The Fixin's Ye'll Be Needin' ::

  • A wee bit o' greenish yarn
  • A crochetery crook :: size US G (4.25 mm) works right well!
  • A par o' shears

Step The Farst ::

Make a slip knot and put it on your hook.  Now chain 4, as shows above.

Step The Twa ::

Yarn over your hook and enter the 4th chain from hook (the first chain you made) as pictured above.  That chain space will serve as your ring.  All future stitches will be worked into that single chain space.

Step The Third ::

Work double crochet (that's why you entered the ch stitch in the first place) and chain 1, as pictured above.

Step The Fourth ::

Sc once in the ch stitch, chain 1, dc once in the ch stitch, chain 1, sc in the chain stitch again, and slip stitch in the chain stitch.  This creates one "leaf" for your shamrock.

Step The Fifth ::

Repeat the leaf twice as follows :: Ch 3, dc 1, ch 1, sc 1, ch 1, dc 1, ch 1, sc 1, sl st into ring.  Now you should have three leaves.

Step The Sixth ::

After you've made your three leaves, chain 6 or 7 to make your stem.  Cut yarn, finish off, tie a knot in the tail, and snip or darn in ends.  In my experience the darning in part doesn't work so well.  I just tie a knot and snip it.
